Abstract

Burnout Syndrome (BS) in students is characterized as a response to chronic stressors linked to the role and activities present in the academic context, which cause serious damage to physical and mental health and academic performance. The objective of the study was to identify the predictive power of demographic and academic variables, emotional demand, emotional dissonance, and empathy for patients with Burnout Syndrome in a non-probabilistic sample of 85 medical students. To this end, an observational, analytical, and cross-sectional study was designed. Participants completed an online questionnaire containing demographic and academic data, the College Student Burnout Scale, the Emotional Demand Scale, the Emotional Dissonance Scale, and the Jefferson Medical Empathy Scale. The results, obtained through multiple linear regression analysis, revealed as predictors the variables female gender, being in semesters further away from the end of the course, greater emotional demands, and greater emotional dissonance. Results indicate the importance of interventions by educational institutions focused on the development of socio-emotional skills and emotion regulation strategies, as well as creating a teaching environment that allows freedom and individuality for the expression of emotions, in order to educate professionals with a greater ability to properly interpret emotions, both their own and those of their patients.
